OTTAWA – Expanded health-care coverage for refugees and asylum seekers was recovered on the day of Friday as the Liberal government acted to end cuts that a judge called cruel and unusual.
Thousands of persons claiming asylum and thousands more resettled from abroad now have their health care costs entirely covered by the federal government with the restoration of the interim federal health program.
“It is a good day for those fleeing persecution,” stated Dr. Meb Rashid, the medical director of the Crossroads Clinic in Toronto who helped lead the charge against the cuts to the program ordered by the previous Conservative government.
But Rashid and others say much still requires to be done to makes sure the refugees and claimants have access to the care they require.
In specific, the Liberals require to be clear about the return of full coverage and early signs are not encouraging, stated Dr. Philip Berger, medical director of the inner-city health program at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto.
