President Aims to Nominate a Successor to Justice Antonin Scalia in Next Weeks

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif.—President Barack Obama on the day of Tuesday stated that he seeks a Supreme Court candidate who “indisputably is qualified” for the job, while administration officers showed that he needs a nominee who can pursue some Republican support and complicate GOP aims to push off any confirmation procedure until after the election.


Mr. Obama claimed he would settle on a nominee within the next various weeks and would “nominate in due time a very well-qualified candidate” to succeed Justice Antonin Scalia, a conservative fixture on the high court who was discovered dead on the day of Saturday.


The White House has ruled out selecting a liberal simply to fire up the Democratic Party base in a pivotal election year, recommending Mr. Obama is searching for someone more qualified. The issue for Mr. Obama is seeking out a nominee who Republicans, particularly Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, find politically complex to reject.


Within hours after Justice Scalia’s death was declared, Mr. McConnell stated that Mr. Obama’s successor, whom voters will elect in the month of November, should fill the court vacancy.
