Healthcare leader looks to deal obstacles to diabetes care in Colombia

Sanofi, a leading contributor of diabetes treatment and related services, has joined the Business Call to Action (BCtA) with a diabetes-management programme for sufferers served by the Colombia’s subsidized healthcare system of Colombia. BCtA is an international initiative that motivates industries to fight the poverty through inclusive business models. It is empowered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and other international agencies.

Diabetes is an international health challenge affecting 415 million persons worldwide; this number is hoped to increase in the future. When not rightly treated, diabetes can lead to complications involving amputation and retinal blindness, which can have huge costs in terms of loss of productivity and income, devastating both sufferers and their families. Yet it is well aware that complications of diabetes can be decreased by making better the blood glucose levels through increased physical activity and a correct diet, as well as with timely treatment with oral antidiabetic drugs and/or insulin therapy.
